Our
correspondent reports from the Homeland: on March 25 the
Chinese Central Committee issued a new rulings about the
mass media. It demanded to reconsider and to “put in
order” the mass media organs, such as journals,
magazines etc., published in the Uighur Autonomous
Region. The official statement says: “ The national
separatists abroad attempt to gain control of the
internal mass media organs. They cause serious threats
to the national security and stability. We need to
tighten the control over publishing and distribution of
the journals and newspapers. The journals and newspapers,
which cause problems, should be put in order. If
necessary, their publication should be halted.”
According to this statement, the process of “cleansing”
newspapers and magazines started on March 26 in Urumchi
city. Presently 118 newspapers, magazines and bulletins
are published in Urumchi, whereas 80% of them are
distributed openly, with the rest published for party
organs and members under the heading “for internal use
only”. |
