On June 1, 2000, a body of a young Uighur was found in the forest to the south from the village of Aksu close to the city of Aksu.
Chinese police experts examined the body and concluded that the man "died from starvation and thirst". However, the police could not determine if it was the same person that was wanted by the police for some time because of the bad condition of the corpse. The parents of the wanted person identified the body as that of their son's.
A Chinese police official ordered to the parents to bury their son's body without a funeral ceremony, and ordered to a Uighur policeman to watch them.
The dead person was 19 years old Mutellip, who, along with many other young Uighurs, was suspected in anti-governmental activities and wanted by the Chinese police in Aksu prefecture in February of the last year.
Mutellip had to hide for four months. Once he was spotted near the forest, and he fled to the woods. He had no food and water for five days, and he died from dehydration, starvation, and freezing on the fifth day. His body was found 7-8 kilometers from the village of Aksu.
Apparently, Mutellip did not want to bring trouble to his relatives since the Chinese authorities practice arrests and fines of the closest relatives of a wanted person as well as cash rewards for a help in catching the fugitive. Mutellip's father was detained and put in the local jail. |
