The World Uyghur Network News 2001

The condolences of the Honorable Chairman of Eastern Turkistan Organization in Australia Mr.Ehmet Igemberdi

On November 9, 2001, at around seven (7) p.m. we learnt in deep grief and sorrow on the death of our beloved Haji Yaqub Yusup, who was not only the former chairman of the Advisory Committee to Eastern Turkistan (Uyghurstan) National Trust and the leading person in liberation movement of Eastern Turkistan, but the famous historian of Uyghur people and well-known social activist.

In this regard, personally and on behalf of Turkistan-Australian community I would like to express our deep condolences to the family of late Haji Yaqub and to the people of Eastern Turkistan with such an invaluable lost. The whole life of the late Haji Yaqup, which was devoted to propagating the independence case for Eastern Turkistan and attracting attention to the sufferings of Uyghur people, was suffered first in 1939 when the cruel enemy of Uyghurs Shingshisey jailed him in Hotan on pretend of being “Japanese spy”, later in 1949 by Maoist Communist for being “Pan-turkist” and “Pan-islamist” which he served this imprisonment virtually till the late 1970’s. His best but invaluable time out of the eighty-one year long life was spent in Chinese communists prisons. Haji Yaqup is considered only the second after the famous prisoner of freedom Abliz Mehsum among Uyghurs in serving the longest prison time.

Even after his release in 1996 from the prison, Haji Yaqub was not left free and was constantly under the moral and political harassment from the Chinese oppressors. Therefore he had to leave to Turkey secretly that year where he contributed his articles on history and the current developments issues at the History Research Institute. His contributions will never be forgotten by our nation and be passed from generation to generation. And as recently we have heard his speeches given to the radio interviewers in Belgium, Brussels, at the premises of the Euro parliament during the Eastern Turkistan Conference and the previous three Eastern Turkistan (Uyghuristan) National Congresses.

Farewell, our bellowed teacher! Farewell… Let Allah place your spirit in paradise and your example will inspire our fellow compatriots to follow your path in seeking liberty and independence, amen!

With sincere condolences and respect,

Ehmet Igemberdi
