A UIGHUR EXECUTED IN HOTAN

On October 16, the Hotan Prefecture intermediate court help an open tial of Yasin Iskender and sentenced him to death. Yasin Iskender was found guilty in "receiveing illegal religious education", "killing a security officer", and "helping a detainee to escape". He was executed the same day.
Yasin Iskender, 23, a Uighur, was a resident of Kona Sheher District of Aksu Prefecture. In 1997, he went to Hotan to study religion in an undergraound Islamic school. When security service officers raided the shool, he accidentally killed one of them.
On February 5, 1998, he assisted in the escape an Uighur woman, Amina, who was detained by the security service also for illegal study of religion.
In the aftermath of the World Trade Center terrorit attack, China had speeded up its Strike Hard campaign in East Turkistan to fight against sepapratism in the region. Since September 11, about 10 Uighurs had been executed and numerous people were imprisoned for "separtism" and "illegal religious activities".
