More Uighurs Arrested in Urumchi

[East Turkistan Information Center, 2001/08/12]

Twenty more young Uighurs have been arrested by police at the Sanshihangze market in the city of Urumchi following a conflict between Chinese tax collectors and Uighur traders a week ago.

On August 6, the Uighurs discontented over the Chinese officials' beating of a young Uighur woman who threw a fruit at the tax collectors protesting their actions against one Uighur trader. In the result, a crowd of Uighurs gathered in front of the local police station demanding the release of arrested Uighurs.

This gathering was interpreted by the police officials as an attack at the police station. So far about 200 Uighurs have been sent to a detention center for the alleged attack at the police station.
A police vehicle packed with detained Uighurs was seen in the city around 3:30 pm on August 12.
