Organizations!
[East Turkistan Information Center,
2001/07/24]
At present East Turkestan is the only region in China where political prisoners have been executed since 1990. Political and religious oppression of Uygurs in Communist China has been especially strengthened after setting up of the "Shanghai Five" Union in 1996. The Chinese Communists sistematically carry out policy of destroying the National and Religious identity of the Uygur people in East Turkestan and Sinozation of the region.
In April 2001 the Chinese authorities started campaign of "hard strike" focused on east Turkestan and since that time up presnt time more than 5000 Uygurs have been accused as "illegal religious elements" , " national separatists" across East Turkestan and sentemced to hard forms od punishment including more than 60 Uygurs executed. All of them were innorcent people exercising their religious rights in the frame of the Chinese laws and demanded their rights from the Chinese authorities. Besides these people more than 100 Uygur students have been expelled from Universities or imprisoned for the same reason. For example, on 6 June 2001 two hundred Chinese students attacked the Uygur students at the Xian University of Chang'an, many of whom were injured. Instead of punishing the guilty persons the Chinese authorities punished the Uygurs students by expelling 11 of them from the University. Recently on the Chinese and Russian initiative "Alliance of the six States" including Uzbekistan has been set up. The main task fo this organization is to strengthen pressure on the Uygurs in East Turkestan and in Central Asia. This organization very much insipred China. Currently China is violating human rights in East Turkestan. Nationa and religious oppression has reached its peak and everyday tens of Uygurs are arrested and punished without any grounds. The Chinese aim at full assimilation of Uygurs in the near future and to turn East Turkestan to the Chinese land entirely. The Uygurs are very much concerned on the position of the Western States towards situation with human rights in East Turkestan. In this connection decision to hold the 2008 Olimpic Games in China must be considered as giving way for human rights' violations in China. This situation weakens trust of the Uygurs to the Western countries. That is why we, the Uygurs living abroad, express our hope that the Western countries and International human rights organizations will not close their eyes on the Chinese policy towards East Turkestan and undertake serious
mesuares.
