Retpospective Of Events Of Social Instability In East Tukistan

[East Turkistan Information Center, 6/21/01]

In the interview to Hong Kong reporters on the May 30, Chairman of "People's Government of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region", Ablet Abdurishit, told: "The social order in Xinjiang is good", "You can see yourselves that the situation in Xinjiang is stable", "There is no problem with security in the society", "The security of the people is guaranteed".

The situation in East Turkistan has not been as tranquil as the Chairman Abdurishit is trying to present. Let us look at the events taken place since the early 1990s.

On April 1990, Uighur farmers rose in an armed uprising against the Chinese rule in the village of Barin of Kashgar Prefecture.

On February 5, 1992, two bombs exploded in buses in Urumchi. Several Chinese died and many were injured.

On March 16, 1992, the armed guerillas of "East Turkistan Islamic Reformist Party" clashed with the Chinese soldiers in the Qaghiliq county of Kashgar.

On September 27, 1992, a group of Uighur fighters exploded the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway in Kumul. In the result, the transportation was cut for several days.

In 1993, a group of fighters led by Alimjan shot 5 retired members of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

On July 18, 1994, the building of the Aksu city security organization, the building of the Toqsu city birth control office, and a bridge were blown up by the Uighur national freedom fighters.

On July 7, 1995, "the Beidulla mosque incident" occurred in Hotan and resulted in clashes between the Chinese soldiers and the local people.

In 1996, in result of an armed clash between Uighur guerillas and Chinese policemen, 2 Chinese soldiers were shot.

On May 12, 1996, the Deputy Chairman of the "Political Council of the Autonomous Region", Harunhan Haji, and his son were attacked in Kashgar by Uighur national freedom fighters and were seriously wounded.

On February 5, 1997, a wide scaled clash occurred between Uighur youths and Chinese soldiers in Ghulja city of Ili Prefecture.

Two buses exploded on 13th and 25th of February, 1997; many Chinese died.

In August of 1999, Uighur farmers organized anti-governmental demonstration in Lop County of Hotan and clashed with police.

Since March 1999 till the beginning of 2001, Uighur fighters led by Kuresh and Shireli in Hotan fought Chinese policemen and soldiers. This movement spread to the Kashgar district.

On February 24, 2001, an armed clash between Uighur fighters for independence and the Chinese soldiers occurred in Kashgar. In the result, a Chinese policeman was shot and many policemen were injured. Shortly after, a Uighur judge by name Memetjan was killed.

Since launching the "hard strike" campaign till April 2001, thousands of young Uighurs had been arrested for "separatism, terrorism, and illegal religious activities", and about 100 of them were executed.

The events and incidents described above hardly demonstrate "peace and stability" in East Turkistan. The lack of means to peacefully express the opposition to the government in the Chinese society and unbearable oppression pushes people to violence causing casualties among innocent Chinese and Uighurs.
