Bomb Exploded In Shihenzi

[East Turkistan Information Center, 6/21/01]

A bomb exploded in "Path of Happiness" restaurant in Shihenzi city of East Turkistan on June 16. The headquarters of Bingtuan's 8th division are located in this city. Deputy Chairman of China, Hu Jing-tao, was visiting Shihenzi when the explosion occurred. Chinese authorities undertook measures to prevent leaking of news on the explosion to the international media. A special investigation group was set up to examine all circumstances of the incident.

The news on the explosion in Shihenzi was first reported to the international media by East Turkistan Information Center. The report evoked commentaries in the mass media of Hong Kong and Taiwan, and it was also reported by Radio Free Asia and Voice of America.

The Chinese authorities first denied the report on the explosion, but, later admitted that such incident indeed took place.

A Chinese official, Ju, told to a "Voice of America" reporter that the incident has been investigated and one Uighur, a "criminal" recently released from a jail, has been arrested in the connection to the explosion. According to Ju, the "criminal" aimed to extract money from the owner of the Uighur restaurant "Path of Happiness".

The bomb went off when Deputy Chairman of China Hu Jintao was visiting Shihenzi. Hu Jintao called to all party and government officials to unite around the communist party's Central Committee and undertake resolute measures against "national separatists and illegal religious activists" in East Turkistan.
