Fugitive Religious Activist Detained

Eziz Somian, a popular religious activist in Hotan, was arrested in Urumchi after 7 years of hiding from the authorities. Eziz Somian is respected by the local people in Hotan for his community activities, including his contribution in educating youths in religion and moral.
The Chinese police established a surveillance after Eziz Somian in 1993 and arrested him in 1994 accusing in "calling for national separatism and instigating Uighurs in activities against the government". He was sentenced and imprisoned, but, in 1995, Eziz Somian escaped from the jail. Eziz Somian has been hiding from authorities under a different name in different regions of East
Turkistan.
