Human Rights Day: A
Distant Dream for Uyghurs
2008 - 12 - 10
The world is celebrating the International Human
Rights Day, but for the Uyghurs in East Turkistan,
joining in the world wide happiness in this day is
a distant dream, as the Uyghur people are living
under the Chinese colonial regime without any
freedom and rights. Many Uyghurs who demand their
basic rights were executed or imprisoned.
In March 23, 2008 more than 500 hundred Uyghur
women who protested are still being arrested and
tortured. The young Uyghur women who demand their
basic rights and refused the relocate to Chinese
cities for slave labor are still on the run or
hiding or unable to return home since Chinese
government will force their parents to pay a heavy
fine if they return to home.
In September 18, 2008, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous
Region Supreme Court Branch in Gulja city
announced the verdict on the case of 12 young
Uyghur man lead by Memeteli. Abdurahman and case
of another 12 suspects lead by Ali Kunahun. All of
them were charged with separatism without any
credible evidence.
160 Uyghur children between age of 8 and 14 were
arrested in September 2008 (the exact date was not
clear) in Inland China. These children had been
send to Inland China Hui (Tungan) Muslim schools
to study Qur’an by their parents, since the
Chinese government banned all religious study in
East Turkistan.
According to our sources, only 10 of these
children were released after parents paid the
heavy fine of 20,000 Yuan for each of them. 150
children were returned to east Turkistan and
jailed in Bajahu prison in Urumchi and their
current situation is not clear.
Before the Olympics, China has launched a mass
arrest campaign, the so-called “Chase after the
Three Evil Forces” (terrorists, separatists and
religious extremists) and has terrorized Uyghurs
in Urumchi and attacked Uyghur former prisoners,
all Uyghur civilians who are not Urumchi residents
and Uyghurs who are seen as generally suspicious.
In July 8, 2008 police forces have killed five
Uyghurs who have resisted their arrest, injured
two and arrested eight persons.
At least 65 people in East Turkistan were
convicted on charges related to the Olympic Games
and At least 20 of these Uyghurs reportedly faced
the death penalty. However, there is no evidence
linking these people to any terrorist
organization.
In September, 2008, the Uyghur journalist Mehbube
Ablesh, 29, was fired from Xinjiang People's Radio
Station and imprisoned. Currently she is still
suffering in prison just because she was outspoken
about government policy.
In November 21, Abdushukur Qurban, an ethnic
Uighur and father of three, was detained without
any proof with suspicion of crimes of endangering
state security; we believe that he is facing
extreme torture and ill-treatment.
It is not possible to mention all on the Uyghur
prisoners list which is available at our hand, but
we can remind this world that our political leader
Rabiye Kadeer’s two sons, innocent Canadian
citizens Huseyin Jelil, outspoken journalist
Abdugheni Memtimin, Uyghur historian Tuniyaz Tohti
and Uyghur writer Nurmemet Yasin are still in
Chinese prisons as well.
The International Human Rights Day is presented as
“Dignity and Justice for all of us” and reinforces
the universality of Human Rights. It should apply
to anywhere, everyone, always. But the Uyghurs in
East Turkistan were excluded and the Chinese
government rejects the universality of human
rights, claiming a Chinese characteristic human
rights. However, the Chinese government’s claim
was unstable as they deprived the Uyghur people of
their rights. We call the people of this world to
join the Uyghur freedom activities around the
world and to support Uyghurs living under the
oppression of the Chinese regime..
