Yasin Turdi, Need urgent medical treatment at
Toksun county prison, jailed for asking justice.
East Turkistan Information Center learned that
political prisoner Yasin Turdi, who was born in Aksu
prefecture, Toksun county has been denied to access
medical treatment for his serious medical condition
after repeatedly beaten with electric shock batons.
His relatives extremely worried about his diabetes
that worsened in the prison and asked permission from
government officials to get medical treatment for him
at the prison. But their request was rejected even
they were agreed to pay his all medical expanses.
Yasin Turdi, was chief at the Toksun county. He
detained many times before the 1987 because of his
political activities which is against the Chinese
communist party. In 1987, Yasin Turdi was released. In
1989 Yasin Turdi was arrested again and convicted for
participating Reste Mosque incident in Toksun.
Reste mosque was seized by the Chinese government
officials at the cultural revolution, after the
cultural revolution, Chinese government sold the
mosque to the Chinese businessman to open Chinese
store. Local Uyghurs were annoyed and demonstrate 15
days to get back the land of the mosque. Yasin Turdi
was arrested at that time, sentenced three years in
prison and convicted for instigating others to
participate demonstration. He was released in 1992. In
the beginning of the 1994 he was suspected of
participating “Justice Organization” in Toksun County
and detained six month without trial. Although he was
released after six month, but still was under the
house arrest until the January 29 2007. January 29 he
was arrested again with the charges of “separatism”
and tortured with various inhuman torturing methods.
Currently he has a worse health condition in Toksun
County prison and need urgent medical treatment. In
fact, this case is not exceptional, and shows the
severe violations against prisoners in East Turkistan.
Many cases of inhumane treatment and punishment
against the Uyghur prisoners have been reported by
human rights organization.
As a member of the United Nations, China is bound
to promote respect for the rights and freedoms
enumerated in Universal Decleration of Human Rights,
as the article 5 clearly proclaim the universal right
of “every one” to be free from torture or other cruel,
inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (Article
5) China also ratified Convention Against Torture
(CAT). The CAT defines torture as any act "by which
severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental,
is intentionally inflicted on a person for such
purposes as obtaining . . . information or a
confession, punish[ment], or . . . intimidat[ion]"
(Article 1 (1). However, treatment of political
prisoners in East Turkistan entirely excluded from
these obligations of Chinese government.
To show its civilized manner to the world at 2008
Olympics, to recognize its obligation on Convention
against Torture, China should refrain from sanctioning
or permitting torture or other forms of cruel,
inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.
