On March 23 and 24, more than 60 Uyghur
women from around the globe gathered at the
National Endowment for Democracy in
Washington, D.C. to attend a Uyghur women’s
leadership workshop, held by the
International Uyghur Human Rights and
Democracy Foundation. The women, who came
from such countries as Kazakhstan, Turkey,
Japan, Norway, Canada, the United States,
and elsewhere, listened to the experiences
and advice of a number of panelists
experienced in human rights advocacy and
leadership training. Workshop participants
also shared their own leadership experiences
and their own ideas about the problems
facing Uyghurs in East Turkistan and the
best ways to address these problems. IUHRDF
founder Ms. Rebiya Kadeer encouraged
participants to continue their civic
activism work together to strengthen their
human rights advocacy on behalf of the
Uyghur people. IUHRDF hopes this historic
event will act as a foundation for a
stronger global network of Uyghur human
rights activists, and will facilitate the
groundwork for grassroots advocacy efforts
in the home countries of Uyghur women
throughout the world.
