Chinese
former deputy governor accused of taking bribes
A former deputy governor in China's far northwest is
under investigation for corruption and has been
expelled from the Communist Party, the government said
Tuesday.
Aman Haji is accused of accepting cash bribes and
letting his relatives run businesses under his
jurisdiction in Xinjiang, a region in the country's
desert northwest, the government's China News Service
reported.
His case has been handed over to prosecutors, the
agency said. It wasn't clear from the report whether
he was still in office when criminal proceedings began
against him.
Corruption is widespread in China, and top leaders
have become increasingly candid about their fears that
rising public anger about official abuses could
undermine acceptance of Communist rule. Premier Wen
Jiabao called last month for new efforts to root out
the problem.
But the Communists have balked at allowing greater
accountability that might undermine their monopoly on
power, opting instead for harsh penalties for
officials found guilty of committing abuses.
