China: Execution of
Uighurs brings total to four in three weeks
Two more Uighurs have been executed in northwest China
for political offences, according to news agency
reports. Sixteen others were jailed on charges of
endangering national security and illegally organizing
a political party. To Amnesty International's
knowledge, the trials of all eighteen Uighurs were
held behind closed doors.
The organization is deeply concerned that the Uighurs
may not have received a fair trial under international
standards. It is not clear whether they had access to
defence lawyers of their own choosing or could
cross-examine witnesses. The quality of the evidence
used against them remains unknown.
Aihe Maititashi and Luoheman Maimaiti were sentenced
to death after a court found them guilty of illegally
producing explosives in the Xinjiang Automonous Region
(XUAR), said Reuters and AFP. They were also charged
with using armed tactics to split the country. They
were executed on 21 July. Amnesty International
strongly condemns the executions.
Two other Uighurs, Idris Kadir, 29, and Kuerba Tudaji,
were executed on 19 July and 30 June respectively.
Both were sentenced on similar charges related to 'separatism'.
