Chinese Excuses
for Oppressing Uighurs

It is well known that Chinese government cracks down
on all Uighur Freedom and Human Right Movements on the
pretext of “fighting against terrorism”. However,
there are many other excuses for confiscating Uighur
real state properties, forbidding religious beliefs
and practices, eradicating Uighur language, ruining
heritage buildings, destroying native environment and
discriminating in employment.
“All land and water belong to the central government”
is the communist government’s excuse for seizing
Uighur real-estate properties for Chinese use and
diverting the rivers and streams of water to help
settle the government supported Chinese immigrants to
Uighur homeland. The result has been proportionally
making the Chinese people and their government richer
and stronger and they are able to destroy any type of
oppositions. A few years ago, the communist party head
of the Kashgar Prefecture unknowingly released that he
had been seizing Uighur farmlands around city, selling
it to immigrant Chinese businessmen and using the
income obtained by the difference to provide more
bonus salary for government officials. Uighur farmers
have been forced to vacate their lands, which they had
been using generation after generation, without or
with very little compensation. They have been losing
their basic needs for food and shelter in their
resource rich region. In 1990s, the Chinese dominant
Xinjiang Railway company obtained a huge amount of
Uighur farmers’ best land, in Kashgar City, with very
little compensation. The central government backed
railway authorities, neglected the discontent of
Uighur farmers and refused their most basic demand.
Although there were plenty of infertile lands around
city suitable for building the Railway Station, they
chose the best farmland and best orchids and housing
areas. Hoping to complain to higher governments, the
farmers made their every effort in rescuing their land
and their future; they have sent representatives to
Urumchi, the capital of puppet autonomous region, and
to Beijing. However, they have been rejected even to
be interviewed and obtained nothing. Knowing that the
head of the Autonomous Region was visiting Kashgar
officially, the farmers gathered in front of Kashgar
Hotel where they wished to meet him for their claim.
As a result, police caught dozens of them and then
others disappeared. The railway event “solved” this
way like many other problems. The city, Kashgar, used
to be Uighur dominant until just several years ago,
and now its metropolitan and “developed” areas have
been seized by the government for the benefits of
Chinese immigrants and its government. In the recent a
few years, thousands of multi-story small flats have
been built outside city, which the government uses for
forcing Uighur people to exchange their big courtyard
houses in metropolitan areas of the city. A city house
has more value than a suburban flat. The government’s
answer for a Uighur who refuses to “sell” his house is
“land is government property” or this is the request
of “development”. The ancient Uighur city, Kashgar,
which has a history of two thousand years, is being
demolished by communists.
“Energy and minerals resources belong to Central
Government” is another policy, which gives a “reason”
for their destruction of natural environments and
non-acceptance of Uighur people for jobs in these
areas. Uighur people barely obtain any benefits from
their country’s rich oil and minerals, instead they
lose as they are not allowed to graze their sheep on
those areas, as they lose their water and land and as
they have to confront air and water pollution by the
industry. The oil and gas in Uighur land have little
benefit to its native people; the price of natural
gas, produced in Uighur region, is higher in local
areas than it in provinces of China. No job has been
provided for Uighurs in this field during the last ten
years, though the first discoverer of the oil was a
Uighur. Minerals such as coal and gold have been dug
lavishly without consideration of protecting
environment.
“Destroy the separatism and independence promotism
when they started to sprout, a separatist or
unapproved religious activist should be made as a
passing mouse which is cornered to be beaten by all
sides”. This is a usual speech of a party boss who
speaks as a spokesperson in big meetings conducted by
the authorities. It is considered a crime to speak
about corruption and corrupted politicians. Any speech
or activity aimed to improve living standards and
education of Uighurs are considered a separatist idea
and activity. Thousands of Uighur youths are
imprisoned, in Kashgar alone, each year. Banning and
burning Uighur historical, cultural and religious
books, audio and videotapes have been increased. The
punishment of the authors and users is severe; any
person who is found to have a banned book, would be
tortured and imprisoned for at least two years. There
are thousands of university and high school students
who have been imprisoned for this reason. No Chinese
has ever been sentenced for a crime like this. Wang
lequan, the secretary of the communist party committee,
of so-called Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region,
controls the whole autonomous region with his bloody
hands and so he was appointed as the third time. The
politicians' jobs are evaluated in how hard-handed and
violent they are in cracking Uighur activities. Most
of the party bosses of Uighur villages and communities
are ex-PLA serviceman who are chosen as they are
violent towards Uighurs. In order to threaten Uighur
children and youths, the government exhibited photos
of Uighurs killed by the communist army in campuses,
schools and even in hospitals. These photos are
guarded all the time for not to be copied in order to
avoid obtaining by western journalists. For example,
there is a photo which shows that the Chinese army
collecting Uighurs killed, to a place, by pulling the
bodies. The caption was “this will surely be the end
of separatists”. The use of Internet is banned for
those who want to search for information on Uighurs.
Radio Free Asia in Uighur language, a radio broadcast
from Washington, is banned and jammed because it is
considered to promote ideas of Uighur independance.
People found to get information about Uighurs from the
Internet and listening to the radio would be tortured
and prosecuted. The government holds “brain-washing”
meetings heavily on Uighur teachers and other
government officials. “Fight against ideological
separatism!” is a policy to punish and persecute
Uighur staff who work for government as police,
teachers and other service personals. This policy has
put into practice in January 2002 to find out the
Uighur people, in the government and at the education
system, who have ideas of promoting “independence”.
Uighurs thinking has been restricted and controlled.
“Development” is the excuse for destroying native
historical heritages and natural environment. The
Chinese authorities have continuously been destroying
Uighur architecture, ruining native plantation and
killing native animals and birds since their take over
in 1950. The Uighur houses which were owned by
landowners were destroyed first after execution of the
owners in the 1950s. Big and old trees were cut down
for iron refining on the open air in response for Mao
order “big jump for improvement”. Native animals were
eaten to extinct or used for Chinese herbal medicine
which is main demand of communist politicians. Birds
were eaten or poisoned as they considered harmful for
crops. Plants were uprooted for herbal medicine. The
government authorities not only destroy Uighur
activities, but also ruin Uighur native environment;
native trees and plants such as poplar, willow,
sand-date, native grass, native roses are removed from
schools and campuses, sides of the streets and rivers.
Uighurs orchids of the schools were destroyed. Chinese
trees, native to province of Shandong are planted.
Uighur historical sites, which related to patriots who
fought against Chinese and Manchu invasions and
occupations, in the history, were destroyed. The
historical places related to the Uighur kings and
kingdoms are destroyed or closed for foreign tourists.
However, a Chinese “historical site”, built in 1998 in
Kashgar, which is open for tourists to distort the
history. Uighur traditional buildings, for example in
Kashgar, which had hundreds of years and had been
lucky enough to be survived in Cultural Revolution,
have been destroyed in last ten years. All of the
Chinese authority contributes a lot to destroy Uighur
Architecture and natural environment; it is very hard
to see a 50-year-old tree in Uighur land.
“It is necessary to use Chinese language alone
officially for equal prosperity”. In Chinese law,
ethnic minorities such as Uighurs and Tibetans have
rights to use and improve their own language in all
systems of education. However, it has been banned
politically which is higher than law in present China.
All of the invaders in the history had allowed Uighurs
to use their own language, but the communist
government banned it in the 21st century. Uighur
written and spoken language, which has a history of
more than 1500 years, is one of the ancient languages
in the world and it has been contributing its part for
world culture and development without harming any
people and any party. However, the greedy Chinese
government authorities have banned it to vacate Uighur
jobs to Chinese in the near future and destroy Uighurs
completely in the long way. Any opposition is
considered political crime and people involved are
punished severely. Even the Uighur request of using
both languages together is not considered. Uighur
educations is being collapsed. Most of the students
are being neglected to learn science so they may learn
Chinese instead. However, Uighurs do not hope losing
their mother language.
“Giving birth to fewer, the quality will be better” is
a popular slogan to advertise the birth control policy.
In present China, the number of children a family
allowed to have depends on where they live and how
much bribe they can give. Giving birth to one more
child over the threshold is a crime for the mother and
death for the near born baby. The parents should pay
the costs for the forced abortion and even for the
police who forcefully taking them to go to the
hospital. It is very common to do the abortion at any
time before the children are born. The near-born baby
is killed by injecting and neglecting their parents
pleads. The government barely spends any money on
information or for training for avoidance of pregnancy
among Uighur women. In addition to that Uighur do not
believe the slogan “giving birth to fewer the quality
would be better”. Many Uighur women have lost their
good health after the forceful abortion. The
government gives no financial or mental compensation.
There are plenty of examples that a grandfather was
accused or detained for the “fault” of his son and
daughter-in-law escaped to have an unplanned child.
The growth of Uighur populations is minimum in
comparison to the growth of Chinese population in the
Uighur homeland
