Press Release

The Hague, April 17 , 2003

Recently some 100 human rights activists from 15 countries around the world dealing with Uighur issues, established the International Uighur Lobby (IUL). The IUL is a international initiative aimed at promoting, securing and lobbying the fundamental rights of the Uighurs. A prominent Uighur lobbyist, Erkin Alptekin; was elected as the spokesperson of the IUL during a private meeting in Geneva on April 3, 2003.

Key objectives identified by the IUL include:

- To strive for long-cherished self-determination of the Uighurs

- To restore democracy, rule of law and human rights of the Uighurs

- To popularize Uighur history, culture and civilization

- To protect the Uighur cultural identity

- To raise the awareness of the international community on the
plight of the Uighurs

The IETL Declares:

- Its unconditional adherence to the internationally accepted human
rights standards as laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant and Political Rights and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights;

- Adherence to the principles of democratic pluralism and rejection
of totalitarianism and any form of religious intolerance;

- Rejection of terrorism as an instrument of policy.
