The Hague, April 17 , 2003
Recently some 100 human rights activists from 15
countries around the world dealing with Uighur issues,
established the International Uighur Lobby (IUL). The
IUL is a international initiative aimed at promoting,
securing and lobbying the fundamental rights of the
Uighurs. A prominent Uighur lobbyist, Erkin Alptekin;
was elected as the spokesperson of the IUL during a
private meeting in Geneva on April 3, 2003.
Key objectives identified by the IUL include:
- To strive for long-cherished self-determination of
the Uighurs
- To restore democracy, rule of law and human rights
of the Uighurs
- To popularize Uighur history, culture and
civilization
- To protect the Uighur cultural identity
- To raise the awareness of the international
community on the
plight of the Uighurs
The IETL Declares:
- Its unconditional adherence to the internationally
accepted human
rights standards as laid down in the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant
and Political Rights and Economic, Social and Cultural
Rights;
- Adherence to the principles of democratic pluralism
and rejection
of totalitarianism and any form of religious
intolerance;
- Rejection of terrorism as an instrument of policy.
