MORE UIGHURS SENTENCED IN HOTAN IN CONNECTION TO ABLA EBEY'S CASE


On February 3, an Uighur, Abla Ebey, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hotan Prefecture Court for "terrorism, ethnic separatism, violation of the unity between nationalities, and activities aimed at splitting the country". Several hundred other Uighurs have been arrested with the suspicion in connections with Abla Ebey. The following are names, obtained by East Turkistan Information Center, of some of the people arrested during the period from February 5 to February 15.

1) Abdurehim Yoldash, 29 years old, from Atbeshi village, Tavakkul district of Hotan Prefecture. Have a religious education. Accused in writing 600 pages document promoting the Uighur national independence. First detained for two months and then released and put under surveillance. Then the Chinese police arrested him again and sentenced him for 17 years of imprisonment.

2) Ehmet Eli, 28 years old, from Atbeshi village, Tavakkul district of Hotan Prefecture. Have a religious education and taught religious courses to young Muslims. In 1989 he was arrested for writing and dissemination of anti-governmental slogans, detained for 70 days, and then released but kept under surveillance. He was arrested again and accused in connection to the case of Abla Ebey and sentenced to 17 years imprisonment without proof of guilt.

3) Abla Qasim, 38 years old, from Atbeshi village, Tavakkul district of Hotan Prefecture. Arrested and accused in transporting weapons from "inner Chinese provinces to Xinjiang". Sentenced to 13 years imprisonment without proof of guilt.

4) Mehmet Tohti Abduqadir, 39 years old, from Qatqa village, Tavakkul district of Hotan Prefecture. Before he was detained several times by the police for the "instigation of anti-governmental activities", released and kept under surveillance. Suspected in contacts with Abla Ebey and sentenced to 17 years imprisonment.

5) Nebi Yusup, 23 years old, from Atbeshi village, Tavakkul district of Hotan Prefecture. Falsely accused for having contacts with Abla Ebey and making bombs. Sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.

6) Ehmet Memtimin, 17 years old, from Atbeshi village, Tavakkul district of Hotan Prefecture. Accused in being member of the group formed by Abla Ebey and "listening to counter-revolutionary propaganda". Sentenced to 6 years imprisonment.
