PRESIDENT OBAMA: NEW HOPE AMONG UYGHURS

2009-01-27

Minister and Party Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security, Zhou Yong Kong, released a televised speech on January 21, in the afternoon and summarized the work of China’s national stability in 2008, deeply analyzed the current situation and requested hard work to maintain political stability and unity in China.

After listening to his speech, the so called Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region’s general secretary, Wang Le Chuan, expressed his support of the speech and said, “We do not give up our struggle against our enemy, and we should never be soft handed in our policy.” It is obvious that the so called enemy that Wang Le Chuan was referring to were the Uyghurs in East Turkistan (Xinjiang).

Although Zhou Yong Kong or Wang le Chuan’s speech was a repetition of old slogans of high level Chinese officials, it brought attention to Uyghurs worldwide because this speech was given at same day the historical event of the inauguration of US President Barak Obama. Also, this speech was given a week after the Foreign Minister of England, David Milliban, gave his speech about terrorism.

“The war against terrorism is wrong…. Military is not the solution…. Terrorism is a tactic not an ideology...” said David Milliband.

The Chinese government has been oppressing local Uyghurs for many years through various cracks down campaigns. Uyghurs were subjected to eradication from their own land as a nation since the September 11th attacks as China maneuvered the global War against terrorism to justify its aggressive regime.

Chinese State Council Information Office published a white paper entitled China's National Defense in 2008 last week and announced to increase the fiscal budget of defense. China used empty handed Uyghurs in so called Xinjiang, Tibetians and US military support in Taiwan as an excuse to justify its increasing military budget plan in its white paper.

Uyghurs were expecting hope from the newly elected American President, Barak Obama, they believe he may not only be able to bring change for the United States but also to the whole world including the Uyghur’s that are suffering under the oppressive Chinese communist regime.
The Bush Administration and the Chinese Government together put one of the Uyghur freedom fighter organization on the United Nations terrorist organization’s list in 2002.

“Uyghurs love Obama, unlike the Bush Administration, he may not be as cooperative with an oppressive regime,” said a young Uyghur man who just arrived to the US with his student visa..
