Brief analysis of the general political situation in Eastern Turkistan in 2005

Perhat Yorungqash

2005 has been claimed to be a year of “peace and stability” regarding the political situation in the Uygur District by both the Central government of China and the manipulated authorities of Eastern Turkistan. Moreover, they are celebrating “the fruit of victory” during this year. By their consideration, “stability” and “peace” is when there are no strikes or uprisings, explosions or armed conflicts.

Of course, peace and stability are also the dearest wish of the Uygurs, since there is no people who likes to live in an environment not peaceful and stabile. However, if we look at real situation in Eastern Turkistan, we realize that it was the Chinese government who was destabilizing and breaking peace in this territory and has been greatly benefiting from that - and this is well known to the world.

For example, in the of December 2005 edition of the famous magazine “Economist” in America there is an article “Western district under Chinese pressure” and in this article it is written: “in Uygurs’ territory because of rise of dissatisfaction of Muslim people who are not of Chinese origin, the Chinese government may apply a policy which was applied before in 1997 in Guldja”. It has foreseen that the Chinese way of planting seeds which will destabilise and break peace in this area, will give its results in the future.

Let’s have a look on the political situation of Eastern Turkistan for one year, and it will become obvious that the policy of the Central government of China against the Uygurs was in comparison even worse than in previous years. In November 2005 (sene yazılı değil) political actions under the title of “Precaution for security during the ceremony of the 50 year anniversary of the Xingjian Uygur Autonomic District” has been carried out and all areas of Eastern Turkistan have suffered from this action.

For example, the following has been shown in one of the news of the Chinese “Boshun news network”:

For the “Precaution for security during the ceremony of the 50 year anniversary of the Xingjian Uygur Autonomic District”. The District Communist Party, the local government and the security services of the district worked out a programme for “General projection for ensuring safety during the celebration of the 50 years anniversary of the Xingjian Uygur Autonomic District”, and to ensure political stability in Xingjian to organized a special “strong strike” action till October 20.

In this article, its said that this special “strong strike” action will start from the beginning of the year till October and will include the following 5 points:

Firstly, “Against Eastern Turkistan terrorists”

Secondly, “Against illegal religious actions and antigovernment policy with the use of religion”

Thirdly, “Against the enemies of national policy, and racists”

Fourthly, “Against ideological national separatists”

Fifthly, “Against enemies of freedom and national autonomy”

From these five points mentioned above, we can easily see that if the Chinese Government had focused only in one direction before, during this year its aim is to cover all areas of the Uygur land.

Here, the Chinese government means by:

“Against Eastern Turkistan terrorists”, action against Uygurs who want to be independent, free, build a future for themselves and who struggle for this;

“Against illegal religious actions and antigovernment policy with the use of religion”, action against people who ask for their religious rights and who are fighting against the Chinese governments policy in the religion;

“Against the enemies of national policy and racists”, action against Uygurs who are fighting the policy of the Chinese communist government, which is based on assimilation and plundering;

“Against ideological national separatists”, action against Uygurs who are well educated and like their nation, care for their nation’s future, and know the history of the nation and are making it public in different ways;

“Against enemies of freedom and national autonomy”, action against Uygurs who understand the real meaning of the Chinese government policy and humiliation of their rights and existence of the “Law on national territorial autonomy” only on paper and not as being implemented in real life and can hold this against them!

In conclusion, we can say that the Chinese government is hiding the protection of its own rights and interests under this strike, that is, mobilization of all forces for continuation of its policy against Uygur the nation and humiliation of their rights as was done in previous years. Taking into consideration such circumstances, we cannot make use of the words “peaceful” and “stabile” for Eastern Turkistan. Such aggressive policy of the Chinese government is only strengthening the willingness of the Uygur nation to struggle for independence.

Of course, there was also good news for the Uygurs in 2005; namely the release from prison of Rabiya Qadir, famous leader and protector of human rights of the Uygurs and her joining her family in the USA. If there had not been pressure from the Committee on Human Rights Protection of the UNO, Western nations under the leadership of the USA and other human rights organizations the Chinese government would have kept Rabiya Qadir in prison until her death, as it is happening with so many sons and daughters of the Uygur people. However, as Rabiya Qadir said, only one Rabiya has been released, but thousands, ten thousands of Rabiyas are still suffering in cold prisons!
