Chinese government
launches special ‘Strike Hard [campaign]’ against the
Uighurs
[Reported by Kanzhongguo 30 May 2005] The East
Turkestan Information Centre, which is engaged in
Xinjiang pro-independence activities, has said that in
order to safeguard the 50th anniversary of the
founding of the XUAR, on 20 [May] the autonomous
region’s Party committee, government departments and
autonomous region PSB were issued with a notice on the
“Overall plan of work for safeguarding the XUAR 50th
anniversary activities”; and on that day launched a
special ‘Strike Hard [campaign] to safeguard political
stability in Xinjiang to run until 20 October.
The main targets of the ‘Strike Hard’ are:
1. East Turkestan [dong tu] terrorists
2. illegal religious activities and [those] using
religion to split the country
3. [those] attacking the Party’s nationalities policy
to damage unity of the nationalities
4. splittists in the ideological field
5. [those] using internal contradictions between the
people to attack the laws of our nationality
autonomous region.
Ruzumemet Imam of the Centre pointed out that this
document once against proves that the Chinese
government is using counter-terrorism to attack the
Uighur people. He said that if the international
community do not put greater pressure [on China] then
every Uighur is faced with the risk of arbitrary
arrest and detention.
