PLA TRUCKS TRANSFERRED TO GHULJA
July 28, 2002. More than 50
Chinese People's Liberation Army trucks have been
transferred from China proper to military district No.
8660 which is located at Yengi Hayat region of the
city of Ghulja (Yining).
This district was established in Ghulja after the
February 1997 incident when the Chinese army and
People's Armed Police brutally suppressed a peaceful
demonstration of Uighur youths. Some residents of
Ghulja believe that the military district was
reinforced by the Chinese army in order to keep under
control a possible labor unrest of local unemployed
people
regardless of their ethnicity.
CHINESE TO SPY ON UIGHUR TEACHERS
July 16, 2002, the Chinese administration in Kashgar,
assigned two Chinese female babysitters to work at the
human resources office of Kashgar's Uighur Secondary
School No. 1. There were no Chinese workers in the
office before this assignment.
It is believed that the women were put in Uighur
school to spy on Uighur teachers and staff members.
