The policy of
the Chinese government with the aim of ethnic Chinese
migrants of the active exploitation of the East
Turkistan’s resources rasing the great concerns amoung
Uighurs and leading to a quick degradation of its
ecologycal environment.
According to the newly publishing newspaper the “Weekly
Air Quality” from November of 1997 in Urumqi alone the
standards of air far exceeding the maximum allowed
concentration of the heavy accids in air. According to
the statistics for the 21 weeks of the hot period in
Urumqi city smoke concentration exceeded 101 times the
allowed level reaching its 5th level within 12 weeks,
4th level within 6 weeks and the 3rd level within 3
weeks of the maximum permitted. Thus the concentration
of the heavy elements such as sulfate and nitro raised
due to the deforestation and the desert storms followed
right outside of the city. Moreover, the concentration
is being mix with the coal waste from the city itself
and adding to the further pollution of the area.
Foreigners visiting Urumqi in winter time observe the
following by referring to the city as the “gate of the
hell’, “smoke city”. It is interesting that the worst
pollution occur in the area inhabited by ethnic Chinese
and the most the campaign launched by authorities are
carried out specifically in these regions. For instance
in Chitey a water refinery plant was erected but the
question is whether such temporarily things might change
the predator behavior of the Chinese aimed just to
exploit area. The hungry Chinese government’s policy is
threatening the population to be exposed to the
environmental catastrophe. |
