CHINESE POLICE BEAT UP INNOCENT UIGHURS EXTRACTING CONFESSIONS
According to our reporter in East Turkistan, on March 28 a Chinese member of "Bingtuan" was killed in Ili Prefecture. The Chinese authorities suspect local Uighurs in the murder, and arrested more than 50 Uighurs considered by the police as "unreliable individuals" who were detained after the Ghulja (Yinin) incident of February 1997 and then released for lack of evidence.
The arrested Uighurs had been brutally beaten up by the police for three days extracting confessions. On the third day, the police informed that a murder suspect was detained in the inner China who was a temporary worker, a Chinese, who came to Ili seeking a job. The arrested Uighurs were released but they have suffered heavy physical and moral abuse by the Chinese police. No apology was offered to the Uighurs by the police.
