China should not hide the truth of
the Shayar incident
2009-03-17
In March 16, Chinese media reported that police
arrested a young man, in February 22nd, who posted
a fake story on the internet about the Shayar
incident. but they did not release his full name.
“The young man was charged for causing demonstration in the Shayar County,”
the report said.
“There had been quarrel between Uyghur game
players and Chinese guards in the internet cafe in
the Shayar County. There were no death casualties,
some people were injured and send to the hospital
for treatment. But one of the young Uyghur man
distorted the story and posted on the internet the
fake story that a Uyghur teenager was beaten up
and killed by 16 Chinese guards in the game Cafe.”
ETIC had learned the story through phone call in
January 30th and interviewed several eye witnesses
of the incident. All of the eye witnesses
confirmed that after the dispute with the young
Uyghur man and Chinese owner of the internet Café,
Chinese guards suddenly said that they going to
close the Café and pushed people out and locked up
the young Uyghur man inside. Eye witnesses said
there were 16 Chinese guards inside and people
heard the scream of the young Uyghur man, but they
couldn’t enter because the door was locked, after
few minutes young men’s dead body was thrown out
of a second-floor window.
Following the incident, the family of the victim,
and Uyghurs in the Shayar County ask justice,
peacefully demonstrated against the violence at
the street. However, Chinese police cracked down
the demonstration and arrested 8 of them. Right
after demonstration, Radio Free Asia contact with
victim’s mother and interviewed her as well.
However, one and half month later, Chinese
government publish distorted stories through its
government control media, trying to hide the
incident and pressuring the victims family and
other Uyghurs not to tell the truth. The young
Uyghur man who posted the true story on internet
had been arrested and forced to confess. Chinese
government said that he might get minimum 5 years
imprisonment.
ETIC strongly condemn China’s distorted media
coverage and shameful behavior that trying to hide
the truth. We ask Chinese government to not punish
the people who tell the truth and immediately
release the young man who posted the true story
about Shayar incident on internet. .
