Lethal attack on right to speak
mother language
2009-01-26
According to Chinese state media, Chinese
government will invest 3.8 bln Chinese Yuan in the
construction of pre-school so called kindergartens
in East Turkistan, planning to intensify the
development of pre-school Chinese language
education.
In fact, So called bilingual education in East
Turkistan is monolingual Chinese language
education that target Uyghur kids to speak Chinese
language as a mother language and eradicate Uyghur
language.
2.1 bln Yuan of total investment will be used in
building pre-school kindergartens and the left
will be used for teacher cultivation. Since second
season of 2008, Chinese government has already
spent 200 mln Yuan in building 214 bilingual
kindergartens in 3 prefectures of south East
Turkistan.. In 2008, the junior Xinjiang classes
that opened in Chinese cities maintained an
enrollment scale of 5,000 students, and total
15,000 student’s junior school age Uyghur children
were remote from their family transferred to
inland Chinese schools. The senior Xinjiang
classes in inland provinces also completed the
enrollment plan of 5,412 students in 2008, with
17,500 students at school that transferred from
their home to far away inland Chinese cities.
Although Uyghur kids and families of these kids
strongly against to remove Uyghur kids from their
home and cultural environment and sending to the
totally strange environment, Chinese government
cash bonus policy attracted poor Ugyhur families,
serious economic deprivation created by Chinese
government forced many families to compromise with
Government plan. According to Chinese state
statistics, The Uyghur students from families of
farmers and herdsmen in East Turkistan take higher
proportion against that of 2007, increased from
68% to 90%.
Acceleration of compulsory Chinese language
schools for Uyghur Children eliminated the rights
of speak of own mother language
Uyghurs concerning that banning Uyghur language
schools and intensifying monolingual Chinese
education is lethal attack on Uyghur culture.
According to ETIC sources, Although Uyghur
intellectuals in East Turkistan collect signature
about this issue submit to the government, The
Chinese government not only rejected the request
but also criticized and pressured the people who
signed the petition. “Chinese state media did not
cover the issue, but government zipped everyone’s
mouth secretly and quickly. The parents of the
Uyghur kids have no other choice, they worrying
that their children may never be able to find the
job in the future if their mother language is not
Chinese,” the local Uyghurs said..
