Loss of grain producing land and
Uyghur farmers in East Turkistan
2009-01-24
Since China invaded East Turkistan and following
the large scale of Han migration, grain producing
acreage of East Turkistan largely destroyed or
reduced to crops like cotton under the government
command production plan. For instance, according
to Chinese statistics, one third of the grain
producing land loss was created in Hoten region in
30 years. Hoten is the largest agricultural region
of East Turkistan, and heavily populated with
Uyghurs. In 1970s there were no Han Chinese
populations.
In 1978, Hoten’s grain producing land was 3million
320 thousand mu (Chinese acres) the total grain
output was more than 295 thousand tons. In 1988
the grain producing land was decereased to 2
millon 139 thousand Chinese acres and total
production was increased to more than 506 thousand
tons, in 2008 grain producing land was 2
million240 thousand Chinese acres and total
production was increased to 100 thousand tons, the
statistics reported.
One of the undeniable losses of grain producing
land was caused by arbitrary exploitation natural
resources and Han settlers’ housing construction.
There are also other reasons like desertification,
command agricultural plan that force Uyghur
farmers to reduce their grain producing land to
cotton producing land.
According to local research, desertification of
land is rapidly increased in East Turkistan since
Chinese settlers destroyed ecological balances of
East Turkistan.
Despite the loss of grain producing land, grain
production was increased as China forced Uyghurs
to produce genetically modified corps and forced
them to use of synthetic fertilizer that required
higher operating costs .as a consequence, farmers
were forced to take high interest loans. However
farmers not only end up with heavy debt that they
unable to pay, but also with hunger and homeless.
Because, each Uyghur farmer produced total grains
are taken over by the Chinese government and
calculated as some portion of the heavy taxes. It
increases total production of amounts of grains in
government inventories.
In 2009, Hoten region communist party committee
announced to reduce grain producing land again and
increase production through new technology.
Uyghur farmers worrying that it will put Uyghurs
in more poverty, since the grains were collected
to the government inventory are only to feed Han
Chinese migrants not the Uyghurs.
“Recently government declared to increase grain
crops prices. If so, Uyghur farmers cannot afford
to by grains, but Han Chinese can” said one of the
Uyghur farmer from Hoten. .
