HEAVY LAND TAX FORCED UYGHUR FARMERS
ABONDON THEIR LAND
2008-12-13
So called Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region tax
bureau announced that recently the Autonomous
Region People's government decided to raise the
land tax and collected high amount of land tax.
For example, compared to before, the Chanji city
has highest land tax regulation and it was
reformed from between 0.4 and 3 Yuan to 1.2 Yuan
and 9 Yuen for per square meter. The lowest land
tax between 0.15 Yuan and 1 Yuan was adjusted to
0.45 Yuan and 3 Yuan for per square meter.
According to report in Chinese government website,
land tax was raised two times in every other
places of East Turkistan. In average, each square
meter land tax is cost 5 Yuan. If we calculate in
this rate the farmers would be forced to pay 3333
Yuan for per mu lad. However, Uyghur farmer’s
annual income was only around 1000 Yuan and
impossible for them to bear this heavy land tax.
Uyghurs worrying that new land tax regulation will
force more and more Uyghur farmers to abandon
their land and become homeless. But Chinese
government quiet happy with this new regulation
since it facilitates large scale of Han Chinese
immigrant’s residential problems. Millions of Han
Chinese immigrants could dominate those abandoned
lad wile Uyghurs become landless and homeless.
