HONG KONG (Reuters) - A U.S. teacher
working in China died from the SARS virus
while being rushed to a Hong Kong hospital,
a government spokeswoman said on Thursday.
James Salisbury, 52, was certified dead
after arriving in Hong Kong by ambulance
from China's southern Guangdong province
late on Wednesday, she said.
Salisbury's six-year-old son had also
contracted the disease and was in a stable
condition in a Hong Kong hospital, the
spokeswoman said.
The disease, which has infected nearly
2,900 and killed 107 around the world
since the first reported case in southern
China in November, has shown no signs of
abating in Hong Kong.
The former British colony, hardest hit
outside mainland China, has reported 970
SARS infections and 27 deaths since March. |
