China to Justify Crackdown with the Help of Beijing-picked Uyghurs

March 2, 2003 (UIA) – China is going to further justify the hard-handed policy toward the Uyghur people this week during the two major conferences in Beijing with the support of handpicked Uyghur delegates by the authorities, a Uyghur dissident in Sweden said.
According to Dilshat Rishit, the Chinese authorities are ready to take advantage of the party-coached recommendations to be offered by the Uyghur delegates attending the National People’s Congress and People’s Political Consultative Conference, and take a tougher policy toward the Uyghur people.

Mr. Rishit said, “China is trying to ward off the international pressure with the help of these handpicked Uyghur delegates and legitimize its crackdown of the Uyghur people”.

“These Uyghur delegates were never elected by the Uyghur people. They were all handpicked by Beijing to serve China’s political interests in the highest level. China will use them to deceive the world by showcasing their participation in the conferences.”

He said, China, in order to justify further crackdown of the Uyghur people through the mouth of Uyghur “leaders”, tells the Uyghur delegates what to recommend before the conferences, then, in their name adopt measures to further persecute the Uyghurs.

Sources from Beijing said, 96 delegates from “Xinjiang” have come to Beijing to attend two conferences. 60 out of 96 will attend the National People’s Congress while 36 out of 96 will attend the People’s Political Consultative Conference this week.
