The Muslims of East Turkistan completed Ramadan
under the cruel Chinese suppressions
The ongoing terrorist policy of the Chinese
authorities towards the Uighur Muslims in East
Turkistan became harsher in the holey month of
Ramadan. It has been many years since the students,
teachers and government employees were restricted from
fasting during Ramadan. In this year farmers have also
been held back from fasting particularly in many
southern parts of East Turkistan. In the village the
authorities set inspectors to investigate if any
families were fasting, the investigators checked homes
door to door to see if any lights were on during Sehri
(Fajar) time, those who were caught were fined 30 yuan.
And If they couldn’t afford to pay they were sent to
free labor campaign for a month, if the workers were
caught, they were fined one month salary.
In the universities fasting was openly banned,
Students from Xinjiang University, Xinjiang University
of Technology, Xinjiang Commercial college and many
other universities who were caught fasting were
heavily punished.
Certain universities set up investigation groups to
check student apartments, if any students were caught
with their apartment lights on their rooms were
immediately broken into and students were questioned.
In class students were educated not to fast, and
students and teachers were invited for group lunch in
order to make sure that they were not fasting.
The government published official documents stating
rules and regulations about fasting for the students
and teachers to obey. These rules were taken very
seriously by the universities, if these rules were
broken the government made clear that students and
teachers would be banned from work or any further
education.
