China: Public Security Bureau confirms two dead in Urumqi suicide bombing

BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Feb 1, 2002

Text of report in English by official Chinese news agency Xinhua (New China News Agency)

Urumqi, 1 February: The Public Security Bureau of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region confirmed Friday [1 February] that a suicide bomber and a policeman were killed in an explosion at noon in Urumqi, the regional capital. The bombing also injured two other policemen, and damaged five nearby motor vehicles.

Police said the suicide bomber, in his 30s, was of Han nationality. He had strapped explosives on to his body and shouted that he had contracted the AIDS virus and did not want to be alive while walking down the Zhongshan Street of Urumqi City.

The man detonated the explosives at 11.52 a.m. outside the Tianshan Department Store and died immediately. A policeman who had been persuading him not to commit suicide was also killed.

Further investigation is being conducted, the police spokesman said.

It was reported earlier that one person was killed in the suicide bombing.
