China: Public Security Bureau confirms two dead in
Urumqi suicide bombing

Urumqi, 1 February: The Public Security Bureau of the
Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region confirmed Friday [1
February] that a suicide bomber and a policeman were
killed in an explosion at noon in Urumqi, the regional
capital. The bombing also injured two other policemen,
and damaged five nearby motor vehicles.
Police said the suicide bomber, in his 30s, was of Han
nationality. He had strapped explosives on to his body
and shouted that he had contracted the AIDS virus and
did not want to be alive while walking down the
Zhongshan Street of Urumqi City.
The man detonated the explosives at 11.52 a.m. outside
the Tianshan Department Store and died immediately. A
policeman who had been persuading him not to commit
suicide was also killed.
Further investigation is being conducted, the police
spokesman said.
It was reported earlier that one person was killed in
the suicide bombing.
