The Chairman of the National
Congress Enwerjan stressed out in his report that “New
world situation after 9-11 events created new problems
for Uyghurs like in 1933 and 1944.” This argument has a
solid basis. After 9-11 events in Homeland and in
Central Asia the Uyghur national liberation movement has
faced new hard times. The Chinese policies in Central
Asia are strengthening in Central Asia. The Shanghai
Cooperation Organization was created in1996, last year
it incorporated Uzbekistan. The Uyghur people are
oppressed in the east by the direct Chinese oppression,
and in the west Central Asian governments, which fall
under the Chinese influence, also persecute the Uyghur
liberation movement. Also, because of diplomatic attacks
of China, the Uyghur organizations in Turkey have
recently faced serious restrictions.
In this case the Uyghur political refugees in Central
Asia were extradited to China or arrested, their
organizations and national cultural centers closed. The
Uyghurs in China have been persecuted in all possible
ways. Meanwhile the international community remains
indifferent in this case.
However, after 9-11 events, new opportunities also arose
for Uyghurs:
First, the US and the West presence in Central Asia make
China lose its control in this region so Uyghurs may get
some relief,
Second, Eastern Turkistan which neighbors with
Afghanistan attracts much attention of the world
community, and discussions over the Uyghur agenda
started in the media, so our national liberation front
has a unique chance now to provide true information to
the world public.
Third, despite all efforts of the Chinese regime, the US
and Western countries differentiate between global
terrorism and the Uyghur liberation movement, and
acknowledge the right of Uyghurs for political and armed
struggle (inside the homeland national borders).
For example, after 9-11 events the 3rd session of the
Euro parliament acknowledged that Uyghur organizations
act lawfully in about 20 countries without any legal
restrictions or problems, whereas the Chinese regime
portrays them as terrorists.
Fourth, the Western alliance led by the US put economic
and political pressure on the Turkic states of Central
Asia in order to distance them from China. Uyghur
organizations in Central Asia whose activities were
restricted in recent years again became more active –
there are now favorable conditions for nearly 1 million
Uyghurs who live in Central Asia. They might in future
turn in the main force of the fight against the Chinese
invaders under the leadership of the US and Western
allies.
The policies of the USA towards Central Asia and its
attention to the Uyghurs’ activities prove that America
has strategic plans for this region, which includes also
Eastern Turkistan.
World powers all have a certain degree of interest in
the Eastern Turkistan natural resources. Some of Uyghurs
believe that “ oil and other resources will save us.”
And that is true to some extent. America and Europe
recently did everything possible not to disappoint
Uyghurs. The average timing of the Uyghur radio program
in the US was extended from half an hour to one hour
recently. We need to understand how to take a full
advantage of this situation. |
