1. Chinese migrants - source of unrest in the East Turkistan

The statement of the East Turkistan Informational Center on the February 1st explosion in Urumchi city.

An explosion carried out by the ethnic Chinese migrant in Urumqi capital city on the February 1st is a vivid example of the growing problems in East Turkistan due to the mounting number of migrant's inflow. According to the Chinese News an explosion at the Trading Center Palace in Urumqi city which was carried by the 33 years-old Chinese migrant from inner China led to a death of one and left wounded several more. Cars at the near-by parking lot were damaged severely as well.

Chinese "Xinhua Agency" announced that the delays in payments to this worker led him to explode himself. If this action had been carried out by an Uighur and not by ethnic Chinese, regardless of any reasoning the Chinese government would be quick to announce that "East Turkistan's terrorist organization was involved in this act of brutality" to the whole world. It is well known that some actions of violence by ethnic Uighurs who were not associated with any organization of the East Turkistan's independence movement were labeled as the conspiracy of the Uighurs "terrorists" by the Chinese government.

There were an explosions in East Turkistan carried out by ethnic Chinese migrants earlier in the history too. For the first time a bomb was placed under the car was detonated in the mid-80's in Urumqi, than a group of the ethnic Chinese known by Uighurs as "patriots" placed secretly a watch-bomb under the seat of the Chairman of the "Board of the Xinjiang Water Affairs" Mr. Minop. As the bomb exploded a daughter of Mr. Minop’ Shamgul was killed pitifully. As the investigation was launched afterwards but ceased soon as the police start discovering the role of the involvement of the ethnic Chinese in it. On June 11th of the 2001, an explosion was carried out at the restaurant in Xihenze city of the East Turkistan at the time when the Deputy Prime-Minister Hu Jing Tao was visiting the town and thus the incident became known not only in East Turkistan but well beyond it. Authorities were quick to point out without preliminary investigation the "possible role of the Uighur separatists in it" but when it was discovered that the ethnic Chinese migrant Gao Hui Tian actually exploded it the government was quick to conceal facts. Such actions of the ethnic Chinese migrants are carried out often in Ili region of the East Turkistan.

Besides of the fact of the explosions itself, it is a fact due to the double standards existence of the Chinese government in punishing ethnic Chinese in contrary to Uighurs, "Hard for Uighurs, soft for Chinese", the crime rate for ethnic Chinese is very high and is growing from a day-to-day. The "Strike Hard" campaign launched in 80's in East Turkistan by the government against the crime was soon become known as the campaign directed against the Uighurs appraisal, but ethnic Chinese criminals were left alone. This situation led to the "everything is permitted" for the ethnic Chinese migrants and arose the deep antipathy of Uighurs towards them.

When the Chinese communist occupied East Turkistan in 1949, the ethnic Chinese population was barely 400 thousand and now according to the official sources this number exceeding 7 million. An inflow of the ethnic Chinese migrants to the region led economic, social hardships for Uighurs in the areas such as housing, cherishing the cultivated land, in trade and manufacturing. In contrast of the Chinese officials' claim "the land is rich and big" Uighurs in areas such as in Kashgar, Khoten, Atush possess merely one mo of the cultivated land, but the Chinese Bingtuan farms have at their hand that much land that in order to able cultivate it they invited Chinese migrant workers for seasonal work. The widening gap between ethnic Chinese and the local population in distributing the wealth, pensions, salaries and other benefits leading to the growing anger against the ethnic Chinese.

The communist China is implementing an ideology of the big brother to ethnic Chinese and thus the later leading to view the local population as the second-class. And naturally, the policies of the humiliation and disrespect to the local customs which became a normal standard of behavior of ethnic Chinese makes all Uighurs angry.

Due to the chauvinistic nature of the government the local Chinese population view themselves as the masters of the local people and not as an ordinary citizens. And this is why every time when Uighurs rise against occupation of the ethnic Chinese, and Chinese quick to arm themselves and help military to suppress Uighurs who does not have even a stick to defend themselves. For instance in the events in Barin, Khoten and on February 5th in Ghuldja, the local Chinese were played an active role in suppressing “unrests”. For instance in surprising the event in Barin the local Bingtuan units of the 5th people's army and Chinese citizens in Kashgar region took an active role together with the army in this event. In suppressing event in Ghuldja the 4th unit of Bingtuan took an active role in it. On February 8th 1997 Bingtuan unit armed with the latest weaponry made a demonstration in front of Uighurs and thus inflaming the anger of the local population towards them. Events such as this lead to the growing tensions among local and Chinese nationals.

The above mentioned facts show us that the real case of unrest in East Turkistan are not "East Turkistan terrorists" as claimed by the Chinese government but the ethnic Chinese migrants in the region. The situation is further complicates as the Chinese government is trying to label Uighur's independence movement as the "terrorist one". After the September 11th event, when the situation such as this exist, and when Communist China not distinguishing the truth and the lies is adding more to unfair policies in the region.
