The following summary of executions of Uyghurs are prepared by Uyghur American Association

Chinese Government Executed at least 114 Uyghurs

Sentenced to Death Another 3 in Two Years

On February 5, 1997, a peaceful demonstration in Ghulja City turned into a violent conflict as the Armed Police and People's Liberation Army (PLA) used force to break up the demonstration. After that incident, China has exacted swift and bloody retribution on the participants of the demonstration. According to the witnesses from the area, thousands of people were rounded up by authorities immediately after that incident, and around a hundred people were killed secretly behind closed doors. Torture was widely used.

Because of the media blockage by the government, news about many killings, especially the ones that took place in Uyghur heartland, such as Kashgar, Hotan and Aksu, have not been covered by the media. Even so, the death sentences covered by various news media have reached a staggering 117 cases in just two years. In other words, one Uyghur in every 72, 000 Uyghurs is killed by the government. Among these, 111 people were sentenced to death at mass trials and executed immediately, 3 were shot to death by armed police when they were bidding final farewell to the fellow Uyghurs who were being taken to the execution range. Another 3 of them are waiting for execution. They were not given fair trials, they were not given a chance to prove their innocence and save their young lives. The Chinese government's cold-blooded casualness in taking People's lives is a big disgrace to humanity.

For a people of 8.3 million officially acknowledged population, the magnitude of this atrocity is horrifying. The debilitating effect is felt by the entire Uyghur population. This is one of the most serious atrocities committed by a government at a peaceful time like this. Yet, little attention has been given to this horrendous situation by the international community

We hope 117 Uyghur lives will matter when it comes to grading the Human Rights Record of China.
